Marktplatz

Handsome medieval market square lined with burghers' houses and the town hall

Naumburg's Marktplatz is a well-preserved medieval market square, surrounded by the sort of gabled burgher houses and civic buildings that were ubiquitous across Germany before the twentieth century and are now increasingly rare. The town hall (Rathaus) dates from the late Gothic period, with a Renaissance upper section added later. St Wenceslas Church (Stadtkirche St Wenzel) flanks the square and is worth entering for its organ, which J.S. Bach tested and approved in 1746, and for the Cranach altarpiece inside.

The square is the heart of Naumburg's modest but lively town centre. A weekly market is held here on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The cafes and Weinstuben around the square are pleasant places to sit, and the wine — Naumburg sits at the northern edge of the Saale-Unstrut wine region — is worth trying.
