Stadtkirche St Wenzel

Gothic church with a Bach-approved organ and Lucas Cranach altarpiece

The Stadtkirche St Wenzel — the main Protestant parish church on the Marktplatz — is less famous than the cathedral but contains two remarkable objects. The Cranach altarpiece (1518), painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder, depicts the Passion of Christ and includes portraits of some of the Naumburg clergy of the day as witnesses. The organ was rebuilt in 1746, and Johann Sebastian Bach — then at Leipzig, an hour away — was brought in to test and approve it. He declared it excellent.

The church tower offers the best elevated view over the old town and the Saale valley. Admission is modest, and the climb is easy enough for anyone who can manage a few flights of stairs.
