Ammoudia Beach

Ammoudia Beach is a 600-metre arc of pale sand along the south side of the river mouth, with shallow, calm water and a gentle slope — ideal for small children. The Acheron itself empties into the sea at the north end of the beach; the brackish water there is cooler and tinged with the green of the upstream reedbeds.

A few seasonal beach bars and tavernas operate during the summer, with sun loungers for hire and showers. The beach is rarely crowded compared with the busier coast further south. Backed by low scrub and the lagoon wetland, it feels much wilder than its neighbours.
