Acheron Delta Wetland

The Acheron Delta is a Natura 2000 protected wetland of marsh, brackish lagoon, and reedbed at the river mouth. Herons, egrets, and migratory waterfowl are reliable sightings; bee-eaters and rollers pass through in spring; otters work the river channels and turtles can be seen in the shallows on a calm morning.

A small information centre on the road into Ammoudia maps a couple of walking trails through the wetland; the river-boat operators usually weave between the reeds on their way upstream and double as a bird-watching trip.
