The E4 European long-distance path crosses Amorgos, running the length of the island along the rocky spine from Katapola through Chora to Aegiali in the north. The full traverse takes a full day for fit walkers, but the trail can be done in sections from almost any point on the island. The terrain is rough — loose stones, steep drops, little shade — and the heat in July and August can be punishing.
The reward is a landscape stripped back to essentials: bare rock, scrub, the occasional chapel, and the Aegean in every direction. The path between Chora and the Hozoviotissa monastery passes through some of the most dramatic scenery on the island. Start early, carry two litres of water minimum per person, and wear proper walking shoes.
