Kritsa Gorge

The gorge below Kritsa is one of the more accessible walks in eastern Crete — a narrow canyon of pale limestone that you enter from the road below the village and follow for two to three hours on a well-worn path. The gorge floor is shaded by plane trees and rocky outcrops, and a stream runs through it in spring and early summer.

The walk starts near the church of Panagia Kera and descends gradually toward the coast. You can walk the full length and return by road, or turn back partway. Wear proper shoes — the path is rocky in places and slippery after rain. The gorge is at its best in April and May when wildflowers are out and the water is still running.
