The Tholos is the most photogenic structure at Delphi and the one that appears on almost every postcard of the site. A circular marble temple from around 380 BC, it stood in the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, the precinct dedicated to Athena that visitors passed before reaching the main sanctuary of Apollo. Three of its twenty Doric columns have been re-erected, enough to convey the elegance of the original design.
The sanctuary of Athena Pronaia is about 800 meters east of the main archaeological site along the road toward Arachova, a short walk that most visitors skip because they arrive by bus directly to the main entrance. This is a mistake. The Pronaia sanctuary has a character quite different from the crowded Apollo precinct: quieter, more intimate, surrounded by almond and olive trees. The Tholos and the remains of two other temples here are worth a dedicated visit.
