Apella is the beach that photographers use when they want to illustrate Karpathos. A long arc of white sand backed by sheer limestone cliffs, with water that ranges from turquoise at the shore to deep blue further out — and almost no development in sight. There is no road down to it, just a footpath from the parking area above.
The cliffs frame a perfect natural amphitheatre and block the prevailing meltemi wind, which makes Apella sheltered and calm even on days when the open coast is rough. A small seasonal beach bar operates in summer. Come in the morning for the best light and before the excursion boats from Pigadia arrive.
