The Karpenisiotis river cuts a deep gorge through limestone as it descends from the mountains above Karpenisi toward the Acheloos. The main hiking trail follows the riverbank through the gorge, passing through plane tree forest, over wooden footbridges, and alongside clear green pools — the water is cold even in midsummer. The walk from the edge of Karpenisi into the heart of the gorge takes about ninety minutes each way and requires nothing more than decent shoes and some care on the wet rocks.
The gorge is also the venue for rafting and kayaking operations that run from spring through autumn. The river is graded Class II–III in most conditions, suitable for families and beginners with a guide, with a few more challenging stretches after heavy rain. Several outdoor operators based in Karpenisi run half-day trips that include equipment and shuttle transport back to town.
