Karpenisi's pleasures are overwhelmingly outdoor. In winter the Velouchi ski resort draws Greek families escaping Athens; in summer hikers and rafters arrive for the gorges and rivers. The town itself is a comfortable base — a main square, a handful of cafés, a small local museum — but the draw is always the landscape beyond.
