Velouchi Ski Resort

Greece's best-kept alpine secret, above 2,000m on Mount Tymfristos

Velouchi is the ski resort serving Karpenisi, set on the slopes of Mount Tymfristos at around 1,700 to 2,100 metres above sea level. It offers around fifteen runs, a gondola and several lifts, ski school, and rental equipment — a fully functioning winter sports destination that most non-Greek visitors have never heard of. The season typically runs from late December to late March, depending on snowfall.

What makes Velouchi appealing beyond the slopes is the setting. The views from the upper lifts stretch across the Agrafa range, one of the most isolated mountain massifs in Greece, and on clear days you can see the Pindus peaks to the north. In summer the ski lifts sometimes operate for hiking access to the upper ridges, making Tymfristos a genuinely accessible high-altitude walk from a cable-car base.

A story
Mount Tymfristos, at 2,315 metres, was known to the ancient Greeks as Tymphrestos and formed the northern boundary of Aetolia. During the Second World War the surrounding Agrafa range became a stronghold of the Greek resistance precisely because its remoteness made it ungovernable — neither the Axis occupiers nor later the Nationalists ever fully controlled the high valleys.
