Vouleftiko

The Vouleftiko — the "Parliament House" — is the large stone Ottoman mosque on the east side of Syntagma Square. Built in the early eighteenth century by the Agha Pasha, it was the largest mosque in Nafplio until the Greek state requisitioned it in 1825 to house the country's first elected parliament after independence. That makes the Vouleftiko, formally, the birthplace of modern Greek democracy.

The building is no longer a mosque or a parliament. It is now an exhibition and event space, open intermittently for shows and concerts; check signs out front for what is on when. Even closed, the broad open interior visible through the doorways is worth a glance.
