Georgiou I Square

Georgiou I Square is the heart of Patras — a large, colonnaded neoclassical piazza that was designed by the Bavarian architect Stamatios Kleanthes in the 19th century after Greek independence and remains the city's main meeting point. The surrounding buildings are unified by covered arcades that run all the way around the square, providing shade in summer and shelter in winter, and the whole ensemble has the civic confidence of a city that took its own importance seriously.

The square is flanked by the Apollon Theatre on one side and several handsome public buildings on the others. Cafes and bars under the arcades fill up from mid-morning onwards and stay busy until late. This is the place to sit with a coffee and watch Patras go about its business — students from the university mixing with shoppers and office workers, the occasional political gathering, the permanent chess players at the corner tables. The carnival processions use the square as both stage and audience, and during the carnival weeks it becomes the centre of the city's celebratory life in a way that feels organic rather than organised.
