Greek Genocide Memorial

A memorial in the Freattyda district to the Greeks of Asia Minor, hundreds of thousands of whom landed in Piraeus as refugees after the catastrophic war with Turkey of 1919–22 and the population exchange of 1923. The arriving boats unloaded at the very waterfront where the memorial now stands.

The figures of mothers and children are striking. Notably sober compared with most Greek war memorials — worth a brief stop to grasp how much of modern Piraeus is descended from those refugee waves.
