Kastella is the steep neighbourhood that climbs the hill between Mikrolimano and Zea — white neoclassical and 19th-century houses on narrow streets that twist up toward the Prophet Elias chapel at the summit. In antiquity this was Munichia, one of the three fortified harbours of Athens, and the strategic point that controlled the city's access to the sea.
The summit gives a 360-degree view: the harbours of Piraeus below, the islands of the Saronic Gulf to the south, and the Acropolis silhouetted to the north-east. The open-air Veakeio theatre on the slope below is one of the best summer venues in the Athens area.
