Serres is 90 km northeast of Thessaloniki and well connected by road. The KTEL coach service runs regular buses from Thessaloniki's Macedonia bus terminal -- the journey takes about 90 minutes. The train station is south of the city and slower in practice than the bus.
The nearest airport is Thessaloniki's Makedonia (SKG), about an hour and a quarter by car or shuttle. From the Bulgarian border, the Promachonas crossing is about 70 km north of Serres; the city makes a useful stop on the route from Sofia to Thessaloniki.
