Plateia Eleftherias -- Liberty Square -- is the centre of modern Serres, a large open space lined with cafes, a couple of fountains, and the town hall on its north side. It was laid out as part of the comprehensive replanning of the city after the 1913 fire, replacing a tangle of Ottoman-era streets.
The square is at its best in the early evening, when the volta -- the traditional Greek pre-dinner walk -- fills it with all generations of the city. Several of the cafes have been here since the 1960s. The covered market and the main shopping streets run off the south side.
