The church of Saints Theodore Tyro and Theodore Stratelates was the cathedral of Serres throughout the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The original eleventh-century basilica was burnt in 1913 when the retreating Bulgarian army set fire to most of the city, but the foundations and lower walls survived and the church was rebuilt on its original plan in the 1930s.
Inside are surviving fragments of the original mosaic floors and a small collection of icons and wood-carved screens. The double dedication -- to both St Theodore the Recruit and St Theodore the General -- is unusual; the two soldier-saints share a single feast day in the Orthodox calendar.
