Palamari is the most important archaeological site on Skyros, a Bronze Age settlement set on the island's northeastern coast. Low walls, foundations, and defensive remains trace a community that was plugged into the Aegean long before the island's later monasteries and villages took shape.
The appeal is partly the site and partly the setting. It is exposed, quiet, and open to the wind, so the ruins ask for a little imagination, but they also give Skyros a deeper history than its beaches and hilltop chora suggest. Bring water and avoid the hottest part of the day.
