Blue Caves (Galazia Spilia)

The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, at the northern tip of Zakynthos, are among the most spectacular sea cave formations in the Ionian Islands. A series of connected sea caves and arches in white limestone fill with refracted blue-green light when the sun is at the right angle, giving the water inside a luminous, otherworldly quality. Boat trips enter the caves and allow swimmers to jump in from the boat.

The caves are best reached by speedboat from Alykes or from the landing at Cape Skinari itself. Trips typically take around two hours including travel time and swimming time in the caves. Morning departures have the best light and usually calmer seas. The approach to Skinari past the limestone cliffs of the north coast is scenic in itself.

A story
The blue colour inside the caves is caused by refracted light, not bioluminescence or any property of the water itself. Sunlight entering through underwater arches is refracted upward and reflects off the white limestone walls of the cave interior, producing an intense aquamarine glow that suffuses the space. The effect is most vivid in the morning when the sun angle is right and the sea is calm.
