Alykes is a small beach resort on the north coast of Zakynthos, about 16 km from Zakynthos Town. The name comes from the salt lakes (alyki) that sat just behind the beach and were worked until 1985 — you can still see the shallow depressions and the old stone bridge that crosses the river Skourtis nearby.
Alykes beach itself is the main draw: long, sandy, and with very shallow water that stays calm even when the wind picks up. It's a good choice for families with young children. Watersports are available from the beach — jet skis, pedalos, waterskiing, inflatables. Speedboats run day trips to the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, which is otherwise hard to reach from the south of the island.
The resort is low-key. A strip of tavernas, bars, and shops lines the road behind the beach. Prices are reasonable by Greek island standards. It's quieter than Laganas and Tsilivi, which suits people who want a base rather than a party.
