The shallow salt lakes behind Alykes beach were operational salt works until 1985, producing salt traded across the Ionian region. They are now a protected wetland and a good birdwatching spot, particularly in spring and autumn migration periods when waders, herons, and occasional greater flamingos use the shallow water. The surrounding reeds and scrub also attract a variety of passerines.
The lakes are separated from the beach by a narrow strip of land and are visible from the road running north through the resort. A short walk along the salt lake edge gives a different perspective on the resort landscape. The old stone bridge over the River Skourtis, which carried salt from the works to the road, still stands and is worth a look.
