Máriabesnyő Pilgrimage Church

Máriabesnyő is a Baroque pilgrimage church complex about two kilometres east of central Gödöllő, set in a wooded valley and surrounded by a Capuchin monastery. The church was built in the 18th century after the discovery of what was believed to be a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, and it has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. The site has a quiet, contemplative atmosphere considerably different from the royal palace nearer the town centre.

The church interior is richly decorated in the Baroque style, and the pilgrimage tradition has left numerous votive offerings. The monastery buildings surrounding the church are still occupied by a religious community. Pilgrimages continue on major Marian feast days, when the site draws large crowds. Outside these periods, it is peaceful and easily visited as part of a longer walk through the Gödöllő hills.
