Kossuth Square

Kossuth Square (Kossuth tér) is the open, pedestrianised heart of Kecskemét, and one of the finest small-city squares in Hungary. It is dominated by the City Hall on one side and the Great Church on the other, with the Calvinist Church and the smaller St Nicholas Church (the oldest building in town, 14th century) lined up at one end.

Walk a slow loop in the late afternoon when the buildings glow in the low sun and the cafe terraces fill up. A statue of Lajos Kossuth, leader of the 1848 Hungarian revolution against Habsburg rule, stands at the centre. The square joins seamlessly with the smaller Szabadság (Liberty) Square to the north, where the Cifrapalota and the Old Synagogue stand — the two squares form a single rambling pedestrian space about 400 metres long.
