Old Synagogue (House of Science and Technology)

The Old Synagogue, a striking 1864 Moorish Revival building with twin onion-domed towers in pink and cream, has stood deconsecrated since the 1940s when Kecskemét's Jewish community was almost entirely murdered in the Holocaust. After decades as a warehouse, it was restored in 1974 and now serves as the city's House of Science and Technology, with an exhibition hall that hosts touring shows.

The interior is worth a look for the architecture alone — galleried, with vaulted ceilings and traces of the original Jewish ornamentation — but the most striking detail is the collection of 15 Michelangelo plaster casts displayed in the main hall, a permanent loan from the Hungarian state. There is a small fee. The synagogue also overlooks Kecskemét's quieter second main square, Szabadság, which is worth a wander.
