Nyíregyháza Synagogue

The Nyíregyháza New Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in the city centre, built in the early 20th century. The building is well-preserved and continues to function as a place of worship, though the congregation is a fraction of what it once was.

For visitors, the synagogue is significant both architecturally and historically. The interior retains its original furnishings and gallery. It stands a short walk from the Greek Catholic cathedral and the other religious buildings that cluster around the city centre — a reminder that this corner of the Hungarian plains was once home to an unusually diverse religious mix.

A story
Before the Second World War, Nyíregyháza had a substantial Jewish community. Almost all were deported and murdered in 1944. The synagogue survived — one of the relatively few in northeastern Hungary still standing — and serves today as a reminder of the community that was destroyed. The congregation that remains is tiny.
