Nyíregyháza sits on the open plains of northeastern Hungary and has a continental climate — cold winters, hot summers, without the moderating effect of hills or water. The best time to visit for comfortable sightseeing is May to September, when the Sóstó outdoor thermal pools are most enjoyable and the village museum can be explored in warm weather.
July and August are the busiest months at Sóstó. If the zoo, baths, and outdoor museums are your main interest, a weekday visit avoids the weekend crowds. The shoulder months of May, June, and September offer pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors.
Winter is quiet but not without appeal — the thermal baths are if anything better in cold weather, and the city functions normally year-round. Snow is common but short-lived.
