Sóstó Village Museum

The Sóstó Village Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) is one of the best ethnographic open-air museums in Hungary. Around 80 historic rural buildings — farmhouses, granaries, windmills, churches — have been relocated from villages across the northeastern Hungarian plains and reassembled in a wooded setting next to the Sóstó lake.

The collection focuses on the vernacular architecture and material culture of the Nyírség, Rétköz, Szatmár, and Bereg regions — areas that retained strong folk traditions well into the 20th century. Each building is furnished as it would have been lived in, giving a genuine sense of rural life before industrialisation. Allow two to three hours. The museum is in the Sóstó resort district, 5 km north of the city centre, and easily combined with a visit to the baths or the zoo.

A story
The museum contains entire farmsteads, windmills, and churches dismantled from villages across the Nyírség and Szatmár regions and reassembled here — a kind of rescue operation for rural architecture threatened by collectivisation and modernisation. Several of the buildings were moved here from villages that no longer exist. On summer weekends, craft demonstrations bring the site to life.
