Magas-hegy Chairlift

The chairlift up Magas-hegy (514 metres) is the most direct way into the Zemplén Hills above Sátoraljaújhely. The ride takes about 20 minutes and deposits you on a ridge with views in every direction: the town below, Slovakia visible across the valley, and the forested volcanic hills stretching south. From the top station, marked trails lead along the ridge and into the forest.

In winter, the hill has basic ski runs and a sledging area — modest by alpine standards but enough for a weekend afternoon. In summer it's a hiking base. The trail network connects to Széphalom, the village where the linguist Ferenc Kazinczy once lived and where his memorial house now stands. Allow two to three hours for a ridge walk and descent.

A story
The volcanic Zemplén Hills are geologically young — they were formed by eruptions about 12 to 16 million years ago. The curious double-peaked silhouette above Sátoraljaújhely, which Sándor Petőfi compared to a miniature Vesuvius, is the result of a collapsed volcanic caldera. The chairlift opened in the 1970s and is still the most comfortable way to reach the ridge.
