Main Square (Kossuth tér)

The main square — Kossuth tér — is the social centre of Sátoraljaújhely and the best place to get a sense of the town's modest grandeur. The baroque County Hall (now the Town Hall) faces the Roman Catholic Church across the square, and a bronze statue of Kossuth occupies the central space.

The buildings around the square are a reasonable record of the town's history as a regional administrative centre: 18th and 19th-century facades with the occasional gap where something was never rebuilt. A few cafes and the town's main bank are on the square. In summer, tables spill out in front of the coffee houses. The market street runs off one corner; on weekday mornings it's where local farmers sell vegetables and eggs.

A story
Lajos Kossuth, whose statue anchors the square, delivered his first major political speech in Sátoraljaújhely in 1832, at the age of thirty. He was a young lawyer at the time, representing Zemplén County at the national assembly, and it was here that he began the career as an orator that would eventually make him the face of the 1848 Hungarian revolution. The square was named for him after his death.
