Sopron's amphitheatre remains point back to Scarbantia, the Roman town beneath today's elegant border city. The site is fragmentary, but it adds an ancient layer to a place better known for medieval lanes and Baroque facades.
Visit as part of a wider walk rather than as a stand-alone attraction. It is most rewarding if you enjoy reading cities through their ruins and odd surviving traces.
