Sopron is pleasant year-round, but the best months are May to September. Summers are warm and dry, the vineyards are actively worked, and the Fertő Lake nearby offers swimming and cycling. December brings a popular Christmas market on Fő Tér that attracts visitors from across the border.
The Sopron Wine Festival in September is the main local celebration, held over several days with tastings, music, and folk events. Austrian day visitors come year-round (the town is just a short drive from Vienna), making the city fairly busy even in low season. Winter can be cold but the old town is charming in the snow.
