Fertő Lake (known in Austria as the Neusiedlersee) is a shallow, reedy steppe lake on the Hungarian-Austrian border, about 15 kilometres from Sopron. At its widest it is about 35 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide, but nowhere deeper than about 1.8 metres. The entire lake and its surrounding reed beds are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
The lake is a major destination for birdwatching — over 340 species have been recorded, and it is one of the most important breeding and staging sites for waterbirds in Central Europe. Cycling around the lake (the circuit is about 125 kilometres, with the well-marked Fertő-Hanság National Park bike routes) is the classic way to explore it. Swimming is possible at the village beaches; the water is warm in summer despite the shallowness. The village of Fertőrákos, with its Roman quarry, is worth a stop.
