The Bencés-templom, known universally in Sopron as the Goat Church, is the most important Gothic building in the city. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Franciscan order (later transferred to the Benedictines), it stands on Fő tér (Main Square) at the heart of the old town. Three Hungarian kings were crowned here, and Sopron's most important civic ceremonies have been held in it for centuries.
The exterior is largely 14th-century Gothic, with a sturdy tower added later. The interior is spacious and well lit, with the characteristic mix of Gothic vaulting and Baroque furnishings that characterises Hungarian church interiors. The attached Franciscan chapter house, accessible through the church, has good 14th-century stone carving. The church is open for visits outside of services.
