The triangular Fő tér — Main Square — is the centre of old Szentendre, ringed by pastel Baroque townhouses and the Blagovestenska Church. In the middle stands a wrought-iron Memorial Cross, the most photographed object in town after the church itself.
The square slopes gently down to the Danube; from any of the cafés that ring it, you can sit with a coffee and watch the day-trippers from Budapest drift through. Many of the buildings around the perimeter now house small museums, shops, and galleries, including the Margit Kovács Museum on the south side and the Marzipan Museum a few doors away. On most evenings the crowds thin out completely after the last HÉV back to Budapest, and the square belongs again to the small population of locals.
