When to Go

Szentendre is busiest from late spring to early autumn, when day-trippers from Budapest fill Fő tér and the boats run on a regular schedule. May, June, and September give the best mix of warm weather and tolerable crowds; July and August are hot and the main streets feel uncomfortably full by midday.

Winter has its own appeal. Most of the museums stay open but the squares empty out, the cafés put braziers on the pavements, and the December Advent market on Fő tér gives the town a quiet, candlelit version of the experience. The boat service from Budapest does not run between mid-October and April, so winter visitors take the HÉV or the bus.
