Things to Do

Szentendre is a day trip from Budapest rather than a destination in itself. The Serbian Orthodox churches, the art museums, and a walk along the Danube embankment are the main activities; with the Skanzen on the edge of town, a full day fills easily. Most visitors arrive on the HÉV by mid-morning and leave on the last boat or the late train back to Pest.

The core of any visit is the triangular Fő tér with its 18th-century Memorial Cross, the Blagovestenska Church on its eastern side, and the Margit Kovács Museum a few steps south. From the square, follow Bogdányi utca north past the Preobraženska Church, or climb the steps up to Templom tér for views over the Danube. The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum (Skanzen) on the outskirts deserves two to three hours of its own and a separate bus journey.
