Požarevac Church

Smallest of Szentendre's Serbian Orthodox churches, on a quiet side street

Address Kossuth Lajos utca

Officially the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Požarevac Church takes its more common name from the Serbian town of Požarevac, the place of origin of the refugees who built it in 1763. It is the smallest and southernmost of Szentendre's Serbian churches.

The Baroque facade is plain by comparison with the Belgrade Cathedral or the Blagovestenska, but the location away from the main tourist drag gives it a quietness the others have lost. Like most of the Serbian churches it is closed outside service times; the iron gate to the churchyard, and a glimpse of the iconostasis through the door, are usually as much as a visitor sees.
