The Gerecse Hills rise immediately north of Tatabánya, a long range of karst limestone peaks topped with beech and oak forest. The highest summit, Nagy-Gerecse at 633 metres, is a comfortable half-day walk from the village of Tardos or from the trailheads above Tatabánya itself.
Marked footpaths and forest tracks crisscross the range, with viewpoints over the Danube valley to the north and the Vértes hills to the south. Mountain bikers and runners use the trails too. The area is largely undeveloped — small farming villages on the lower slopes, summer huts, and the occasional rural restaurant.
