Tatabánya does not pretend to be a tourist town, but it has a few genuine pulls. The giant Turul monument is unmissable in every sense — visible from much of the city and one of the largest bird statues in Europe. The mining museum tells the story that built modern Tatabánya, and the Gerecse hills behind the town offer good walking, caves, and karst limestone landscapes.
