Szelim Cave

Szelim Cave is a large karst rock shelter on the slope of Kőhegy just below the Turul Monument, a wide arched opening that early peoples used as a dwelling from prehistoric times. Archaeological digs have turned up stone tools, bones, and pottery shards spanning thousands of years.

The cave is free to enter and easy to reach on foot from the Turul. The view from the mouth across Tatabánya is excellent, and short marked trails continue along the cliff face. Sturdy shoes are useful as the path can be slippery in wet weather.

A story
During the 1944 winter offensive of the Second World War, the cave was used as a shelter by villagers from nearby Bánhida; a memorial plaque inside records their names and the period they spent underground.
