Akureyri Golf Club

The Akureyri Golf Club operates what was once certified as the world's most northerly 18-hole golf course, a designation it shares with some pride. The course sits at Jaðarsvöllur, south of town, with views across Eyjafjörður and the mountains on either side. It is a genuinely beautiful setting for golf.

The Arctic Open, played in late June under the midnight sun, is the club's main event and draws players from across Iceland and abroad. Even if you are not a golfer, the sight of people playing golf at 2am in full daylight is one of those Iceland experiences that is hard to explain until you have seen it.

A story
The Arctic Open, held here each June, is played through the night under the midnight sun — tee times at 1am are not unusual. The event began in 1986 and has grown into an institution, drawing golfers who want to say they played eighteen holes at 65°N as the sun refused to set.
