Eating Out

Akureyri has a surprisingly good restaurant scene for a town its size. The emphasis is on fish and lamb — both from the surrounding waters and farms — and prices are high by any measure, though lower than Reykjavík.

Rub23 on Kaupvangsstræti is the long-standing local favourite: a Japanese-Icelandic fusion restaurant that does exceptional sushi alongside a solid Nordic menu. The lamb and the Arctic char are both worth ordering. Strikið, on the top floor of the shopping centre overlooking the fjord, is the place for panoramic views and steaks.

For cheaper eating, the bakeries are good — Bakaríið Brauð & Co, a local chain, is worth a stop for pastries and coffee. The town's small supermarkets stock local cheeses and smoked lamb that are far better quality than the price suggests.
