Borgarfjarðarbrú

The Borgarfjörður bridge carries Route 1 across the fjord just south of Borgarnes — at 520 metres it is the second-longest in Iceland, after the now-shortened Skeiðarárbrú. Driving across it gives you the sweep of the fjord, with the town climbing up the peninsula on the right and the cone of Hafnarfjall straight ahead.

There is a small pull-off on the southern side where you can park and walk out onto the bridge for photographs. The bridge replaced a 60-kilometre detour around the head of the fjord when it opened in 1981, and is one of the more visible pieces of Icelandic infrastructure that you encounter on a Ring Road trip.
