Settlement Centre

The Settlement Centre (Landnámssetur Íslands) occupies a pair of old warehouses on the harbour and is the best museum of its kind in the country. One exhibition tells the story of Iceland's settlement in the late 9th century — how the Norse arrived, what they brought, how they organised themselves. The other walks you through Egil's Saga, the bleakest and most beautiful of the medieval Icelandic prose works.

The exhibits are clever rather than grand: dimly lit dioramas, an audio guide in eight languages, and a few well-chosen objects. Allow ninety minutes for both. The on-site restaurant serves a good lamb soup, and the views across Borgarfjörður from the upstairs windows are some of the finest in the western region.

A story
Egil Skallagrímsson — composer of some of the bleakest poetry in the Norse canon — is said to have ridden into Borg as an old man, blind and half-mad, to bury his stolen silver. Local farmers still occasionally turn up Viking-age coins in the boggy ground east of town.
