Tjöruhúsið ("the tar house") is a single long room of communal tables in a tarred timber warehouse on the Isafjordur harbour, part of the cluster of 18th-century buildings around the Westfjords Heritage Museum. The menu is decided each afternoon by what the boats land — usually six or seven kinds of fish, served in cast-iron pans, often with brown butter, capers, and Icelandic potatoes.
Service is communal: everything comes to the table in pans and you help yourself. The price is fixed and the volume of food is enormous. Booking is essential in summer; in winter the restaurant runs more limited hours and you should call ahead.
