The little red-roofed church on the hill above Vik is one of the iconic images of Iceland's south coast. It sits on a promontory above the village with panoramic views over the black sand beach to the west, the sea to the south, and the mountains and glacier to the north. The building itself is a simple Lutheran church of the type found throughout rural Iceland, with wooden benches and plain whitewashed walls inside.
The church is generally open during daylight hours. The walk up from the village takes about 10 minutes and the views from the surrounding hill are better than those from the church door alone. In summer, the hill behind the church is good for spotting puffins, which nest in the cliffs and are often visible flying overhead in the evenings.
