Things to Do

The Westfjords reward exploration. Most of the highlights require driving — the sea cliffs at Látrabjarg, the red beach at Rauðasandur, the great tiered waterfall at Dynjandi — and the roads between them are slow, scenic, and largely empty. In summer, ferries across some of the fjords cut driving time dramatically and are worth taking. The Arctic Fox Centre at Súðavík is the best place in Iceland to see and learn about the only native land mammal in the country. Hot spring pools at Drangsnes, Reykjanes, and Grettislaug make for restorative stops between drives.
