The lighthouse on Fardurris Point at the southernmost tip of Inis Oirr was built in 1857 to mark the southern approach to Galway Bay, replacing an older light on the larger Inis Mór. Its distinctive black-and-white striped tower stands 34 metres high and is automated today, though a keeper's cottage and outbuildings remain.
The walk down from the village takes about forty minutes along a quiet road that becomes a track across the bare limestone slabs of the southern shore. The lighthouse itself is not open to visitors but the headland around it — rough sea, low cliffs, the Cliffs of Moher visible across the sound on a clear day — is a fine, lonely place to walk. Seals are sometimes seen on the rocks below.
