MV Plassy Wreck

Rusting cargo ship hauled ashore by a 1960 storm — and the opening shot of Father Ted

The Plassy is a 1940-built steam trawler, later converted into a cargo ship, that ran aground on Finnis Reef in the great storm of March 1960. The crew were saved; the ship was eventually lifted by a second storm and deposited on the rocks of the eastern shore, where it has been slowly rusting into the landscape for more than sixty years.

The hull is still mostly intact and you can walk right up to it — the upper plates are perforated with rust holes that let the sea wind whistle through, the boilers are still recognisable inside, and the whole thing leans at an improbable angle on a flat shelf of limestone. It has become the unofficial symbol of Inis Oirr, helped enormously by appearing in the opening credits of the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted. Best at low tide, when you can walk all the way around it.

A story
The Plassy was driven onto the rocks on 8 March 1960 during a ferocious storm. All eleven crew were rescued by the islanders using a breeches buoy — the local lifesaving crew received bravery medals. A few weeks later another storm picked the ship up and dropped it cleanly onto the limestone shore, where it has sat ever since.
